Fife Conservatives have welcomed Fife Council’s decision to take forward a Conservative proposal for an urgent report on how Crisis Payments can be speeded up on Fridays, thus helping ensure that those most in need don’t have to wait over the weekend.
Group Leader, Cllr Dave Dempsey said “These payments form an essential bridge for those entering the mainstream benefit system. While the Council’s staff do a great job turning round payment requests, the target of completing them by the end of the next working day means that requests on Friday may not be cleared till Monday. Crises don’t take the weekend off.
“After a robust debate around more general aspects of the benefits system, the Council meeting on Thursday agreed our proposal for an urgent report into how things might be improved. We now look forward to what that report says.
Fife Conservative Spokesperson for Welfare, Cllr Darren Watt added "I'm very pleased by this decision, however I urge Fife Council to compile and publish this report without delay. Some individuals and families may need a crisis payment at some point and we must ensure access to financial support is convenient, swift and uncomplicated."
