Rishi Sunak ‘gone the extra mile’ to protect Scottish jobs
Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross has welcomed the latest expansion of UK Government financial support to protect jobs throughout this pandemic.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak today announced major upgrades to the Job Support Scheme and grants for self-employed workers.
Key new measures include doubling the self-employed grant and making the Job Support Scheme more generous so that the government will pay more of the wage top-up, easing the burden on businesses.
Rishi Sunak’s announcement comes as hospitality industry bodies are beginning legal action against the SNP Government after businesses complained about a lack of consultation.
Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said: “Throughout this pandemic, whenever jobs are on the line and businesses are struggling, Rishi Sunak has delivered.
“With this latest increase in financial support, he has gone the extra mile to protect Scottish jobs and businesses.
“This new, blockbuster support is a major upgrade that shows the UK Government will take decisive action to protect Scottish jobs wherever necessary.
“The SNP’s support for jobs now needs to step up another level. This crisis is far from over, and it’s vital that both our governments work together to support jobs and businesses across the country.”
SNP planning to force through indyref2 in 2021
SNP constitution spokesman Mike Russell has revealed the nationalists would force through a second independence referendum next year if they win a majority in the 2021 Holyrood election.
The Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution said last night that a second referendum “could take place, I’m quite sure, before the end of next year.”
Mike Russell is also leading the SNP’s Referendum Bill, announced in the First Minister’s recent Programme for Government, through the Scottish Parliament at the moment.
Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said: “This crisis is far from over. Around 100,000 jobs are at risk and businesses are closing right now, some of them for good.
“The immediate priority of people across Scotland is fighting this pandemic and saving jobs.
“Unbelievably, the architect of the SNP’s Referendum Bill is calling for another independence referendum as early as next year.
“It’s staggering that they would even contemplate dragging the country through that at the moment. In less than 14 months’ time, they would have Scotland divided and distracted from the huge challenges we’re facing.
“When they should be focussed on Scottish jobs, the SNP Government are in danger of losing the plot. SNP ministers need to leave the Holyrood bubble and get out in the real world where jobs and businesses are under threat.”
