Rishi Sunak has called on voters to use their peach list ballots for the Scottish Conservatives to “finish the job of getting through this health crisis” and “move onto the task of rebuilding our economy.”
The UK Chancellor added “there is one clear risk to this shared goal, and that is the uncertainty of a second independence referendum.”
Throughout the Covid pandemic, Rishi Sunak and the UK Government have protected over a million Scottish jobs through the furlough schemes and boosted Scottish Government budgets by more than £13 billion.
Douglas Ross will be joined on the campaign trail today by Ruth Davidson to launch the party’s final ad van campaign, which appeals for pro-UK voters to lend their peach party ballots to the Scottish Conservatives to stop an SNP majority, stop indyref2 and get all of the focus onto rebuilding Scotland.
Rishi Sunak said: “I have said throughout this crisis, my number one priority is to protect and support as many jobs as possible. Our furlough and self-employed income support schemes have together protected over one million Scottish jobs. The UK Government is spending over £400 billion to support our country through this pandemic. And now our world leading vaccination scheme is delivering a path out of this pandemic and a return to normality for the whole of our country.
“It is vital, for the whole United Kingdom, that we continue to stick together, finish the job of getting through this health crisis, move onto the task of rebuilding our economy and build a better country for future generations.
“There is one clear risk to this shared goal, and that is the uncertainty of a second independence referendum. It would needlessly divide our country and at the worst possible time. Instead, we should be focused on the job prospects of young people in Scotland, they have borne the economic brunt and need the most support. We should be focused on the quality of healthcare and education in Scotland, because you can’t have a strong economy with healthy and high skilled population. And we need to focus on making our streets safer, protecting people and communities from crime.
“The last twelve months has shown that in the darkest of moments, all four nations of the United Kingdom benefit from each other and our partnership. The undeniable truth is that Scotland is a stronger nation because it is part of a United Kingdom. In this Scottish Parliament election, if you want to get your political leaders focused on the things that matter to you and your family, then you need to use your peach party list vote for the Scottish Conservatives.”
Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said: “The UK furlough scheme is protecting Scottish jobs and the UK vaccine scheme is tackling the health crisis.
“Now more than ever, we need to stick together and focus on protecting jobs and rebuilding Scotland’s economy using the firm foundations of the United Kingdom.
“In just 72 hours, the future of the country hangs in the balance. But poll after poll shows that the Scottish Conservatives can stop the SNP’s push for another referendum, just like we did in 2016.
“The only way to guarantee that we stop indyref2 is by pro-UK voters lending their peach party list votes to the Scottish Conservatives, even if it’s just this once.”
The Scottish Government has received an additional £13.3 billion from the UK Government since the pandemic began. In 2020/21, the UK Government delivered an additional £9.7 billion and in 2021/22 they delivered an additional £3.6 billion (HMT, Budget 2021,p70+73, link).
