Potholes increase five-fold over SNP time in power

The number of potholes on Scotland’s roads has increased five-fold over the SNP’s time in power.

Scottish Conservative local government spokesman Miles Briggs said Scotland’s streets are “plagued by potholes” as he highlighted the alarming figures.

He reiterated calls from the Scottish Conservative manifesto for a £200 million Pothole Fund for road maintenance over the course of the Scottish Parliament term.

In 2007, when the SNP came to power, just 3981 potholes were reported.

By 2020-21, that figure was more than 5 times higher at 20,988 potholes over the last year.

Independent research from the Scottish Parliament shows the SNP have reduced local Government’s revenue budgets by almost £300 million since 2013-14.

Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Local Government, Miles Briggs MSP, said: "This new information reveals the stark decline in the state of Scotland’s roads under the SNP.

“Streets all over the country are plagued by potholes. The impact on family finances is substantial, driving up the costs of owning a car.

“We are calling for a £200 million Pothole Fund over the course of the Parliament so that local areas can take direct action to halt the spiralling condition of our roads under the SNP.

“The Scottish Conservatives would deliver more power to communities and reverse the last 14 years of SNP centralisation and cuts to local services.”

The information was published over the weekend in a written answer to Scottish Conservative local government spokesman Miles Briggs.
