Findlay: Swinney ‘softer on justice than Sturgeon’

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said today that John Swinney was “softer on justice than Nicola Sturgeon” over the SNP government’s proposals to release criminals from prison early.

At First Minister’s Questions, John Swinney struggled to defend the SNP’s record on justice and refused to rule out releasing some of the most dangerous criminals in Scotland.

In advance of a ministerial statement being made to parliament by the cabinet secretary this afternoon, Findlay criticised the SNP’s early release of over 500 prisoners in recent months and warned the public would be “shocked” if more criminals were let out before the end of their sentences.

The Scottish Conservative leader said there was a “stunning lack of common sense” being shown by the SNP and urged John Swinney not to grant early release to “killers, rapists, domestic abusers, drug dealers and child abusers”.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: “Over the past 17 years, the SNP have relentlessly weakened the justice system in Scotland.

“Victims and the law-abiding majority are paying the price.

“It’s shocking that the SNP government is now considering the early release of some of the most dangerous criminals in Scotland.

“Victims’ groups fear the consequences of the early release of killers, rapists, domestic abusers, drug dealers and child abusers.

“People in the real world can’t get their heads around criminals not serving the sentence they’re given.

“There is a stunning lack of common sense being shown and it’s leaving people feeling that the Scottish Parliament does not represent them.

“The public looks at what’s happening with the release of prisoners and they rightly feel Holyrood is utterly disconnected from reality.

“The SNP has stacked the entire justice system against crime victims.

“It seems that John Swinney might be even softer on justice than Nicola Sturgeon.”
