Nicola Sturgeon today refused to admit she was wrong to impose Covid restrictions over Christmas.
Douglas Ross accused the First Minister of being too “gung-ho” at bringing in rules that hurt Scottish jobs, businesses and people’s mental and physical health.
At First Minister’s Questions, he said Nicola Sturgeon was “too quick to bring in unnecessary Covid restrictions” but too slow to launch mass vaccination centres, change self-isolation rules and get funding out to businesses.
Earlier this week, SNP MP Pete Wishart said it was a “fair point” to say that the Scottish Government brought in too many restrictions.
Scottish Conservative Leader Douglas Ross said: “The First Minister imposed restrictions that had a massive impact on jobs, businesses and people’s mental and physical health.
“But we can now see they weren’t needed. It was the Scottish public’s actions, not the SNP Government’s restrictions, that got this right.
“The First Minister has tried to build a reputation for caution during this pandemic - but she was far too gung-ho in imposing restrictions last month. The government went too far.
“Nicola Sturgeon wanted to go even further. She claimed repeatedly that the UK Government was holding her back from putting Scotland into lockdown again.
“She wanted to close down the economy - no matter the cost to jobs and businesses.
“The First Minister promised compensation when the restrictions were introduced, now they’re being lifted, businesses are still waiting for a single penny of support.
“The evidence shows Nicola Sturgeon got the big decisions wrong over the last few months. But the First Minister still won’t admit she made the wrong calls.”
