Sarwar must show backbone and oppose Starmer digital ID plan

Anas Sarwar has been urged to oppose Sir Keir Starmer’s “dangerous” digital ID plan.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said Sarwar should stand up to Starmer and call out the “severe flaws” in his proposals.

Findlay said the Scottish Conservatives are opposed to Sir Keir Starmer’s “state control plan”.

On the eve of UK Labour conference, Findlay said it was a test of Sarwar’s leadership to stand up to Starmer on this proposal.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: “Labour’s digital ID plan strikes at the heart of individual freedom and our fundamental right to privacy.

“It is an over-the-top attempt at state control and it is blatant overreach by Sir Keir Starmer.

“In a desperate bid to distract from the chaos in the Labour party, he is putting forward a nonsensical plan that won’t work.

“Reputable employers already check their workers’ ID before hiring and the state already collects enough data on citizens for passports and other documents.

“Starmer’s state control plan will cost a fortune, but it won’t bring down immigration one bit.

“Anas Sarwar should show some backbone, call out the severe flaws in this plan and tell Sir Keir Starmer to ditch it.

“This is a serious test for Anas Sarwar’s leadership. Will he take a stand against Starmer’s nonsense or just go along with the latest trendy left-wing idea, like he did when he voted for Nicola Sturgeon’s gender reforms?”
