Scottish Conservatives vow to always stand up for Scotland's fishermen

The interests of Scotland's fishermen will always be a "top priority" for Scottish Conservative MSPs elected to Holyrood next month.

The party's fisheries spokesman Tim Eagle has made the pledge ahead of a visit to Peterhead Harbour this afternoon, where he will be joined by local Scottish Parliament election candidate James Adams.

Local MP Harriet Cross, Shadow Scotland Secretary Andrew Bowie MP and Shadow Rural Affairs Secretary Victoria Atkins MP will also be in attendance at the event hosted by the Scottish Fishermen's Federation.

Eagle says every other party in Holyrood is "completely detached" from the reality facing Scotland's fishermen.

In an attack on them, Eagle said:

  • The SNP would sell Scotland's fishermen down the river by taking them back into the hated Common Fisheries Policy, under their plans for independence
  • Sir Keir Starmer's UK Labour government betrayed them with his "shameful surrender" to the European Union last year
  • The Greens would have destroyed the sector with their plans for Highly Protected Marine Areas
  • And Reform showed how little they care about the industry by failing to show up to a Scottish Fishermen's Federation hustings earlier in the campaign.

Banffshire and Buchan Coast candidate James Adams added that he will "fight tooth and nail" to ensure the fishing industry thrives in his constituency and for local jobs to be protected if he is elected on May 7th.

Scottish Conservative fisheries spokesman and candidate for Moray Tim Eagle said: “The Scottish Conservatives will always be on the side of Scotland's fishermen.

“Living in Buckie, I know first-hand the importance of the industry for jobs and the local economy and fishermen's interests are always a top priority for me and my colleagues.

“That is shown by the fact we have the local MP, and two key members of Kemi Badenoch's shadow cabinet team in Peterhead today, alongside myself and our excellent local candidate James Adams.

“Every other party at Holyrood is completely detached from the reality facing our fishermen in Scotland.

“The SNP would take them back into the hated CFP and Sir Keir Starmer shamefully surrendered to the EU in his disgraceful deal last year.

“If you want the interests of our fishermen to be protected, you must vote for the Scottish Conservatives on your peach ballot paper across Scotland to stop the SNP winning a majority on May 7th."

Scottish Conservative candidate for Banffshire and Buchan Coast James Adams added: “I know from representing Fraserburgh as a councillor in recent years how important the fishing sector is for our coastal communities.

“It would be an honour to be the MSP for this constituency, and I promise to fight tooth and nail for local jobs and to ensure the industry is not just surviving but thriving.

“The best way to ensure a strong voice for fishermen in Holyrood is to use your purple ballot to vote for myself in Banffshire and Buchan Coast, and wherever you are in Scotland to vote for the Scottish Conservatives on your peach ballot paper."
