Swinney slammed for "dishonesty" over tariff removal

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay has slammed John Swinney's for his "dishonesty" following the removal of US tariffs on whisky products by President Trump.

Findlay says Swinney has "pathetically and shamelessly" tried to claim credit for the deal which was secured by King Charles.

President Trump said he had dropped the tariffs "in honour" of King Charles following his visit to the United States.

However, Swinney claimed that he had fought for Scotch Whisky and delivered in posts on social media.

Russell will join Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride at an Edinburgh bar this afternoon to celebrate the removal of the tariffs.

Sir Mel added that he was delighted to be in Scotland on the campaign trail and working alongside Russell to champion one of Scotland's most important industries.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: "Dishonest John Swinney is shamelessly, pathetically and disrespectfully trying to claim credit after the King secured a deal with the US president to remove Scotch whisky tariffs.

"The people of Scotland will see right through this typically tawdry SNP misinformation as they raise a glass to His Majesty."

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said: "It's great to be back in Scotland and I'm delighted to be with Russell Findlay in Edinburgh, following this excellent news for the Scotch Whisky industry.

"These damaging and punitive tariffs were having a devastating impact - something I heard first hand from a whisky business in Glasgow during my visit earlier this year.

"His Majesty deserves every credit for his quiet diplomacy in securing the removal of these tariffs.

"This will be a welcome boost for an industry which, like many others, is having to cope with the impacts of anti-business policies and punitive taxes from the SNP and Labour."
