Russell Findlay has described SNP plans for a boundary toll tax on motorists entering Glasgow as “modern-day highway robbery”.
The Scottish Conservative leader will campaign in Eastwood today, where the prospect of residents being charged simply for driving to work or a medical appointment inside the city boundary is a major election issue.
Findlay will be alongside local candidate Jackson Carlaw, who is leading the fight against the proposal by SNP-run Glasgow City Council.
Carlaw, who has held the Eastwood seat for the Scottish Conservatives since 2016, says it’s wrong that his constituents are being targeted to plug the gap caused by the Nationalist government’s underfunding of Scottish councils.
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: “The SNP’s plans for a boundary toll tax represent modern-day highway robbery against hard-working Scots.
“People driving into Glasgow for work or medical appointments shouldn’t be forced to pay more because of the SNP’s escalating war on motorists.
“Local champion Jackson Carlaw has led the fight against the boundary toll tax, which is one of many reasons why his Eastwood constituents should vote for him on their purple ballot paper.
“And, wherever you live in Scotland, voting Scottish Conservative on the peach ballot paper is how to stop an SNP majority on May 7.”
Scottish Conservative candidate for Eastwood Jackson Carlaw said: “People in Eastwood are furious and worried about the SNP’s plans to tax them for driving to work or a hospital visit.
“It’s completely unfair and, if it goes ahead, it will no doubt be replicated by Nationalist councils across Scotland – just as Low Emission Zones have since Glasgow was the first to introduce one.
“I’m delighted Russell is joining me to highlight this crucial issue.
“Motorists in Eastwood should not be punished for John Swinney’s failure to properly fund Scotland’s councils.
“Voters can say no to the SNP’s Boundary Toll Tax by casting their purple ballot for me and their peach ballot for the Scottish Conservatives on Thursday.”
