Scottish Conservatives demand public inquiry for victims of disgraced NHS Tayside surgeon

The Scottish Conservatives have demanded that Humza Yousaf launches a public inquiry to get answers for the victims of disgraced ex-NHS Tayside doctor Professor Sam Eljamel.

More than 110 patients have come forward to say Dr Eljamel left them scarred, broken and devastated.

During the SNP’s independence convention last weekend, one victim protested on behalf of those patients.

Theresa Mallett intervened during Humza Yousaf’s speech to demand a public inquiry to get answers.

During First Minister's Questions, Douglas Ross backed her calls.

He also raised a Freedom of Information response published this week which revealed the minutes of a meeting between Dr Eljamel and the Clinical Director at NHS Tayside in June 2013.

Douglas Ross said the response showed Dr Eljamel was apparently “let off practically scot-free”.

He said it was “scandalous” that complaints from victims and NHS Tayside staff seem to have been dismissed and ignored.

The Scottish Conservatives also raised the concerns of healthcare staff that there has been a cover-up to hide why Dr Eljamel was allowed to continue practicing medicine.

Scottish Conservative Leader Douglas Ross said: “Dr Eljamel left NHS Tayside patients who came in for help scarred, broken and devastated.

“Victims deserve answers. There are so many unanswered questions in this appalling case. They need a public inquiry to uncover what happened here.

“Former patients of Dr Eljamel have little faith in another government review.

“Humza Yousaf refused a public inquiry when he was health secretary. Now that he’s First Minister, there are no excuses for refusing to act swiftly.

“It’s scandalous that Dr Eljamel seems to have been let off scot-free despite complaints mounting from NHS staff and victims.

“When he was health secretary, Humza Yousaf should have demanded answers from NHS Tayside chiefs about what they knew and when.

“The SNP Government must now treat this horrendous situation with the seriousness it deserves and act far more quickly.

“The actions of Dr Eljamel ruined people’s lives. But the actions of the health board suggest a cover-up at the highest levels. This demands a full and immediate public inquiry.”
