Humza Yousaf must explain why GRR bill would let sexual criminal access women’s services

The Scottish Conservatives have written to Humza Yousaf about “serious flaws” in the SNP's Gender Recognition Reform Bill after a man who plans to change gender was sentenced to 20 years for abducting a young girl.

Andrew Miller, who is also known as Amy George and is transitioning to become a woman, was jailed for 20 years today for sexual assault and kidnapping.

Reports say Miller lured the young victim into a car, trapped her in his bedroom for 27 hours, and subjected her to a series of sexual assaults.

Scottish Conservative MSP Rachael Hamilton has demanded that Humza Yousaf explains why the GRR Bill would potentially allow sexual criminals like Miller to access women's spaces and services.

The GRR Bill would allow convicted criminals such as Miller to access single-sex spaces. The principle of universal gender self-identification, which is at the heart of the GRR Bill, means even offenders like Miller have a right to access women's spaces.

Scottish Conservative MSP Rachael Hamilton said: “This tragic case is every parent’s worst nightmare and my thoughts are with the young girl and the family at the centre of it.

“The example of Andrew Miller raises similar questions as the Isla Bryson case did about the serious flaws in the SNP’s GRR Bill.

“Humza Yousaf must first confirm this vile criminal will never be allowed into a women's prison.

“He must also explain why the SNP's GRR Bill would let dangerous men like Andrew Miller access women's spaces and services after they have been released from prison. The First Minister should not be spending public money on a costly legal challenge defending this bill.

“This horrible man should never be allowed to access women’s spaces or services. He is a risk to women’s safety.”
