Ross to highlight how energy jobs are “crucial” for Scotland’s economic future

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross will today highlight how jobs in the energy sector are “crucial” for the future of Scotland’s economy.

He will visit a business in West Lothian which has a focus on renewables and say that it is only his party who recognise the need for a 'sensible and pragmatic' transition to net zero.

Douglas says that new jobs being created by firms such as the one he’ll visit must also continue to be supplemented by ones which already exist within the oil and gas industry.

On STV’s debate on Monday evening, SNP leader John Swinney refused to say whether his party would back new oil and gas licences, when challenged by the Scottish Conservative leader.

Labour have also said they will refuse to grant any new licences for the sector.

Douglas Ross says the “continued betrayal” of the sector by the SNP and Labour has a “deeply damaging” economic impact right across Scotland.

The Scottish Conservatives will also lead a debate in the Scottish Parliament today calling on all parties to recognise the “invaluable contribution” of the oil and gas sector.

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said: “Scotland’s energy sector supports hundreds of thousands of jobs. It’s crucial for Scotland’s economic future.

“However, the SNP and Labour’s reckless plans will put thousands of jobs at risk if they continue to reject any new developments in the North Sea.

“The Scottish Conservatives are the only party that will protect existing jobs in our oil and gas industry while also supporting the growth of new jobs at renewables firms like the one I am visiting today.

“North East workers will be dismayed by John Swinney’s refusal to back new oil and gas licences, which Labour have already said they oppose.

“The SNP and Labour’s policies would have a deeply damaging impact in the North East, but also on businesses in the energy supply chain right across Scotland.

"On July 4th, vote Scottish Conservative to ensure you will have a MP who stands up for the energy sector and focuses on creating good local jobs, rather than an SNP MP who will only focus on their party’s independence obsession.”
